Introduction to SimWAPS

SimWAPS is an online tool for first-line assessment of the potential of Velic propulsion for commercial vessels. SimWAPS has been designed to make the potential of wind propulsion accessible and understandable for commercial vessels. Thanks to an intuitive interface and powerful tools, SimWAPS allows you to quickly and easily evaluate the fuel savings that can be achieved with the addition of auxiliary propulsion.

SimWAPS takes into account many solutions of wind propulsion systems. SimWAPS has been designed to limit the number of parameters required by the user and focuses on the effects that have the most influence on the potential of wind propulsion. SimWAPS calculates the aerodynamic forces of the wind propulsion solution on the ship and deduces from this the propulsion power delivered to the ship as well as the reduction in the power required by the propeller shaft.

The thrust force is calculated for a set of true wind angles and true wind speeds, then these results are combined with the wind statistics on the selected route to derive an average energy output that will reduce fuel consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases from the vessel.
